Lighten Your Load

I love Far Side cartoons. Creator Gary Larson retired years ago, but I am forever thankful for his work. We all need to laugh more in life, and I have enjoyed many a laugh at the twisted irony of that cartoon. What on earth was going on inside that guy’s head?

I laugh inwardly even thinking of the two deer standing up on their hind legs, one with a bull’s-eye on his chest as the other exclaims, “Bummer of a birthmark, Hal.”

This week I had two clients tell me that they receive more than 300 e-mails every day. I didn’t bother canvassing the rest of my clients and about their quantity because I didn’t have to. It is over the top.

What Really Matters

Friday, November 25th, 2011

I beg your allowance for some philosophical musing this fall day. Today is a day when many will go and try to find special deals at stores all around our country. The Thanksgiving tradition is now one day removed, and we set our sights toward a deepening winter, more holiday tradition, and the coming of a new year.

What continues to strike me as odd is all of the hustling and bustling for the acquisition of things and the pursuit of successes. Meanwhile, it continues to be the smallest of things that bring us the peace and joy we so ultimately long for.

Adjusted

Selfishness is natural. If you stop and think about it, you are the center of your own experiences and have been since the day you were born. This is important because just about every theory on success or leadership involves some component of serving and caring for others. Heck, even the ubiquitous language we use like “customer service” implies that it is the intent to serve someone outside of ourselves.

For too long I have marveled at how it is possible to have so much data and so many theories on great customer service and so few cases (in any industry) where it is actually put into practice. This week it hit me and it is my HOPE that this writing hits you.

Yes, No, and Fear

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Lately I have been coaching a lot of people to say “no.” When our busyness factor gets to be 9.0 on the Richter Scale, what we say “yes” and “no” to becomes crucial.

There is this simple advice out in the world that says, “just say no.” Perhaps it’s the word “just” that is gnawing at my soul.

One Week Left

Friday, March 25th, 2011

When we are kids we play all sorts of games. Some of us adults do, as well. We play games on a board or with our friends, and sometimes we simply play them in our minds.

Have you ever passed a billboard that proclaimed the dollar amount of the next mega-lottery and wondered what you would do with an extra $34 million?

Another such game is to consider what you would do if you knew you only had one week to live.

Take Back Your Health

Friday, March 4th, 2011

I have been sick lately with a pretty significant sinus infection. As a lifelong learner, I try to draw lessons from all situations in life, and that includes illness.

If there is one lesson I have taken away from this infectious bout, it is this: don’t get sick.

Of course I am being partly facetious. But truth is that one key ‘aha’ from these days is that I often take my health for granted. I feel blessed that, for the most part, I am a healthy person. Are you? Do you take your health for granted?
