The Power of Little

Friday, December 9th, 2011

I am not exactly sure what it is about this time of the year that gets so many people tied up in knots. Confusion, complication, and overwhelmedness seem to reign in the hearts and minds of too many of us.

Is it the season? Is there something about the holidays that makes us over-think things? Do we so desire to take things to completion before the end of the year that we begin to wonder if we can get it all done? (Ironically, we can get all tied up even wondering about what ties us up!)

I want to offer a bit of coaching that could really save us this year.

One More Plate

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

It’s remarkable how many metaphors there are these days for how “busy” we are. We hear things like “I’m in the weeds,” “I’m swamped,” “I’m juggling a lot of balls,” “I’ve got too many plates in the air,” and so on.

Busyness is a deep problem that is unique to this age in time. And I have no doubt that some of the technology available to us has complicated this issue in ways that we are unaware of. Or perhaps we are aware of it, but we simply like the gadgets too much to do anything about it.

Lately I have been coaching a lot of people to say “no.” When our busyness factor gets to be 9.0 on the Richter Scale, what we say “yes” and “no” to becomes crucial.

There is this simple advice out in the world that says, “just say no.” Perhaps it’s the word “just” that is gnawing at my soul.

When to Commit

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

We often write and speak about “Utopia,” a fictitious place that gives us context for perfection, a place where all of our decisions are impeccable and our lives and business are in perfect harmony.

But it simply doesn’t exist.

Still, there is a need to consider it, because it can bring us context for the place we actually live – the broken, imperfect world through which we must navigate our way. Utopia is the ultimate daggling carrot. None of us will ever get there, and yet without it, we would lack direction.

The Power of Rest

Tuesday, June 28th, 2011

It seems to me that our culture undervalues the power of resting. We rarely take time to pause, even for a moment, to just think. It’s not that we never rest, but when we do it is usually when we are forced and not because we choose to.

Now, there are some of you who need to submit to a season of hard work and diligence right now. If that is you, then tuck this post away for a day you will need it.

In our everyday lives there is so much to consider, so many roads to take, problems to solve, and people to help. So much business to be had, or perhaps a truckload of worry because it simply doesn’t seem like there is enough. So we spin, and then spin some more.
