Against Stress and Stagnation

Friday, February 17th, 2012

I could dedicate a hundred blogs to the topic of “time.” We all seem to have so little of it these days. People everywhere are so compressed that they hardly know which way is which.

For many of us, this incessant busyness is a sure path to stress, and heavy stress indeed. And the stress that is created by an increasingly busy world is something of a silent killer.

You don’t need to be an MD to observe that stress crushes the immune system. That’s a topic for another time. Today, I want to discuss another by-product of our lack of time: a lack of self-development.

What Makes the Heart Grow Fonder?

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

There is common idiom that states, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” Like many sayings of its kind, this one probably has some meaning that has been lost in antiquity. But there are so many ways in which this one is just wrong.

In fact, this saying is potentially lethal to your business if you subscribe to it either on purpose or inadvertently.

Relationships simply require presence.

Lighten Your Load

I love Far Side cartoons. Creator Gary Larson retired years ago, but I am forever thankful for his work. We all need to laugh more in life, and I have enjoyed many a laugh at the twisted irony of that cartoon. What on earth was going on inside that guy’s head?

I laugh inwardly even thinking of the two deer standing up on their hind legs, one with a bull’s-eye on his chest as the other exclaims, “Bummer of a birthmark, Hal.”

This week I had two clients tell me that they receive more than 300 e-mails every day. I didn’t bother canvassing the rest of my clients and about their quantity because I didn’t have to. It is over the top.

Moments Matter More

Friday, January 6th, 2012

I could write perpetually about things we are missing as a result of the high-tech fast-paced world we live in. Goals, strivings, and achievements are now coupled with instant access to information and communication of endless sorts.

There is so much advancement and greatness of human development that can come from this that it would be ignorant and possibly dangerous to speak out against it all. However, we must see that there are a few things that are becoming obsolete as a result of it.

One strange byproduct of all this, is our increasing inability to slow down the pace enough to simply celebrate the present.

The Power of Little

Friday, December 9th, 2011

I am not exactly sure what it is about this time of the year that gets so many people tied up in knots. Confusion, complication, and overwhelmedness seem to reign in the hearts and minds of too many of us.

Is it the season? Is there something about the holidays that makes us over-think things? Do we so desire to take things to completion before the end of the year that we begin to wonder if we can get it all done? (Ironically, we can get all tied up even wondering about what ties us up!)

I want to offer a bit of coaching that could really save us this year.

One More Plate

Friday, September 23rd, 2011

It’s remarkable how many metaphors there are these days for how “busy” we are. We hear things like “I’m in the weeds,” “I’m swamped,” “I’m juggling a lot of balls,” “I’ve got too many plates in the air,” and so on.

Busyness is a deep problem that is unique to this age in time. And I have no doubt that some of the technology available to us has complicated this issue in ways that we are unaware of. Or perhaps we are aware of it, but we simply like the gadgets too much to do anything about it.

Rather than suggesting that we throw away all of our technology, I want to offer a more pragmatic suggestion to help with the spirit of overwhelmedness.
