And The Results Are…

Fridays are interesting days. Taking the time to review the week is one of the greatest gifts that Friday gives us. I often find myself coaching a client to create space in their calendar at the end of the week to reflect: What worked this week, and what didn’t? Where are improvements needed in the system? Where can we celebrate effectiveness?

Ironically, too many people claim they don’t have time for such reflection, which is precisely why they repeat mistakes over and over.

In my own reflection, there was a theme that surfaced for me this week, and it has to do with measuring results.

Convert Like Crazy

Marketers use statistics to elicit an emotional response, and it must be working because they keep piling them on. Some of the stats that we hear are so intuitive that it really doesn’t matter whether or not they are 100% accurate.

I heard a statistic yesterday that for every $92 spent in online marketing to get a lead, only $1 was spent on converting that lead.

More Movements

It is no great surprise that we, as coaches, are more engaged with our client’s marketing efforts these days. I haven’t written a lot about marketing because I usually find it more fruitful for my clients to be engaged in selling.

People often confuse selling and marketing. Both are essential to a well-run business, but if you think that you are “selling” as you sit and work on a post card, a newsletter, or your social media efforts, you are kidding yourself. Without a direct connection to a real human, you are not selling.

The Courage to Measure

Frequently, I speak with people who want to understand how they can take their desired actions to completion. There are as many ideas about this as there are questions.

One proven way you can help yourself is to measure your activity and your results. This advice sounds so over-simplified that often people ignore it. The truth is that by measuring, we also keep the stated discipline at the top of our mind. By raising our awareness, we raise our effectiveness.

I find it fascinating that I have rarely come across an individual who doesn’t understand the correlation between measurement and results. And yet, such a gap still exists. Why?
