The Courage to Ask

June 1st, 2012

The field of Emotional Intelligence continues to be one of the most poignant and relevant studies I find applicable to today’s business world. As a coach, I get to observe many people do amazing things as a result of high emotional intelligence skills and others that repeat patterns that absolutely keep them from being great.

Strangely, emotional intelligence is often taught in the negative and thus not widely embraced by people who simply don’t want negativity in their lives. The truth is, we all make daily decisions in our lives and in our businesses that are based on what we think and how we feel about what we think.

I continue to strive to eliminate the “touchy-feely” sound of all of this, because if that’s all it is to you then you may be missing out on a secret that some of the most successful people know (and have known for some time).

Building Trust

May 29th, 2012

Last week I led a presentation at an event we held in Deer Valley, Utah, for a group of people that gather for the purpose of learning and growing. There was some amazing thoughts shared around the concepts of accountability and emotional intelligence – two areas where we could all stand for some growth.

There was another topic that kept coming up over and over, and it really revolved around the idea of building trust. Presumably, you will not have great relationships (business or otherwise) unless you have established trust.

So what is trust? How do we “get” it? Specifically, how can we get better at developing it?

Unthinkable Power

May 25th, 2012

How you respond to your circumstances is a choice. That may seem so blatantly obvious that one can dismiss the concept without thinking about it further.

The truth is that we often allow our responses to simply happen, and we are not as cognizant of the choice we have. Today you are going to have many opportunities to practice choosing your response to a situation. The situation could be good or bad, small or large.

Science has long proven that our responses to our surroundings are actually controllable. However, too many people go about their lives not carefully considering the choice and only responding in ways that they already know. This may be precisely why we don’t make changes that we know we should.

man chases dollar sign

The world we live in can be so bizarre at times. Almost everyone I have ever coached accepts the idea that money cannot buy you the things that really matter. It is a euphemism in our world that we say but still allow our actions to guide us otherwise.

Thus, I find it strange that our culture continues to buy all sorts of books, tapes and seminars that tell us how to get more money. It’s laughable to do a search on Amazon for all the books in the last 10 years that have the word “Millionaire” in the title. Often, the same people buying these books are the ones who are the quickest to quote “money can’t buy you happiness, or peace, or love.”

Then why do you suppose we keep pursuing such things? One small key to this conundrum lies possibly in the pursuit.

Re-Committing

May 18th, 2012

More than a decade ago, Daniel Harkavy wrote an article titled “Get Out of the Backseat and Drive.” It was one of those writings that hit a nerve with many and still has some incredibly relevant points for today.

In that article, Daniel pointed out three very distinct types of time – In Time, Growth Time and On Time. If you want the article, simply let us know and we will send you a copy.

Over the years I have tried to coach and write about another type of time that I have called Off Time.

Rethinking Reality and Hope

April 3rd, 2012

So many blogs, books, and teachings cause us to think about what we are doing. Often, we need to rethink some of our habitual actions in order to keep reality… well… real.

I have kept the discipline of this blog alive for the better part of three years. Now it is time to regroup and rethink.
